Who We Are?
We are a USA based non-profit organization for the alumni of the Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), Burla, Odisha, India settled in USA and rest of North America. The primary goal of the organization is to provide the alumni residing in North America a social and professional networking platform, and to provide an avenue for the alumni to help the Alma Mater and its students.
During the early years of our institute, not many graduates ventured outside of Odisha and India. As a result, there are not alumni from the early years of the institution. Over time, more and more of our alumni started migrating to USA. Many alumni who graduated in the sixties and seventies have been successful and occupied many prominent professional positions. With the advent of opportunities in information technology, the pace of migration to this country has accelerated. It is estimated that over 1000 VSSUT alumni currently live in this part of the world and work in a wide range of professional and academic fronts. The North American alumni has come together on many occasions in helping UCE/VSSUT, its current and former students. The alumni have actively participated in various humanitarian efforts. Informal networking among alumni is taking place through groups in social media such as Facebook, Whatsapp, and Linked-in. Such efforts have been informal, spontaneous and tactical.
Since no formal infrastructure had been available to bring alumni together, an informal group was started on the side among the alumni of the San Francisco Bay area over three years ago. The group conducted many social gatherings around Diwali, summer and on occasions of visiting former alumni and faculty members such as Dr. Ganapati Panda, former director of NIT Jamshedpur in 2016 and Dr. Chitta Tripathy Vice Chancellor of Sambalpur University in 2017. On such events in the Bay area, the alumni came from as far away as Fresno and Los Angeles to celebrate our common heritage and memories of our Alma Mater. Similar alumni events are taking place in many other places in the USA.
To turn this informal group into a formal organization which can bring together all the alumni in USA, an alumni organization in the name of VSSUT Overseas Alumni Association (VSSUTOAA) has been incorporated in the state of California as a non-profit corporation in early 2018. This organization has also received a tax exemption status from IRS under section 501(C)(3). A set of by-laws have been adopted and an initial board of directors has been elected. A web-site (www.vssutus.org) is under development.
There is lot of enthusiasm among alumni for this new organization which will strive to, among other things, hold an annual convention to bring the alumni physically together. Despite the advances in electronic communication, there is still no substitute for the face-face interaction and bonding. A key barrier in our progress is our small size. It is imperative that we involve as many alumni as possible and make it a large organization to effectively fulfill its goals and objectives. The first and foremost step in this endeavor is to reach out to every North American alumni and to encourage them to become active members.
